Primary introduction uses the introduced genotype directly; secondary introduction improves it by selection or hybridisation first.

Introduction, in plant breeding, means bringing a genotype or variety from one region or country into cultivation in a new area where it was not previously grown. Based on how the introduced material is used, it is classified into two types.

Primary introduction: the plant variety introduced from elsewhere is found to be perfectly adapted to the new environment in its original, unaltered form. Since it performs well without any modification, it is directly released for commercial cultivation in the new area, without being subjected to any selection or hybridisation. It is essentially adopted 'as is'.
