Step 1. Catenation is defined as an element's ability to form chains of atoms by bonding to itself.

Step 2. Four conditions must be met for an element to catenate well: (i) its valency must be at least two, (ii) it must be able to bond to itself, (iii) that self-bond must be roughly as strong as its bond to other elements, and (iv) the resulting catenated compound must be kinetically inert toward other molecules.

Step 3. Carbon satisfies all four conditions unusually well: its C-C bond is strong and comparably stable to its bonds with H, O, N, S and the halogens, so it forms an essentially unlimited range of compounds built from chains and rings of carbon atoms bonded both to itself and to these other elements -- this is exactly the structural foundation of organic chemistry. …
