Step 1. Coagulation (or precipitation) is the flocculation and settling out of colloidal sol particles, and it can be achieved by several distinct methods; addition of a suitable electrolyte is chosen here as the representative example.

Step 2. A colloidal sol is stabilised primarily by the mutual electrostatic repulsion between its like-charged particles — for instance, a negatively charged sol such as As2S3\text{As}_2\text{S}_3 stays dispersed because its particles all repel one another.

Step 3. Adding an electrolyte introduces free ions into the medium; the ion carrying the OPPOSITE charge to the sol's particles is adsorbed onto (or otherwise neutralises) the particle surfaces, cancelling out the charge that had been keeping the particles apart.

Step 4. Once discharged, the particles are no longer held apart by repulsion, so they can approach closely enough to aggregate (flocculate) into larger clumps, which then settle out of the dispersion under gravity — this is coagulation. …
