Electromagnetic waves are transverse in nature.

In an electromagnetic wave, the oscillating electric field vector E⃗\vec E and the oscillating magnetic field vector B⃗\vec B are mutually perpendicular, and both are perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels. This is fundamentally different from a longitudinal wave (like sound), where the oscillation is along the direction of travel.
