Gravitational waves were theoretically predicted by Albert Einstein, arising from his 1915-16 General Theory of Relativity, and were directly observed by LIGO in 2015.

Working

Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (1915) describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime produced by mass and energy. In 1916, Einstein showed that this theory predicts gravitational waves: ripples in the curvature of spacetime that propagate outward at the speed of light, generated whenever massive objects accelerate asymmetrically (such as two orbiting black holes or neutron stars spiralling into each other).
