Laser action needs population inversion sustained by pumping, a metastable energy level, and an optical cavity that provides feedback for stimulated emission to dominate.

  1. Stimulated emission must dominate: for light amplification, the rate of stimulated emission from excited atoms must exceed the rate of absorption by atoms in the lower state.
  2. Population inversion: normally, lower energy states are more populated than higher ones (Boltzmann distribution). For stimulated emission to dominate, an unnatural condition called population inversion must be created, where more atoms exist in the higher (excited) energy state than in the lower state.
  3. Pumping mechanism: energy must be continuously supplied from an external source (optical pumping using flash lamps, electrical discharge, or a chemical reaction) to excite atoms to the higher state and maintain the population inversion.
  4. Metastable state: the upper lasing level must be a metastable state, i.e. one with an unusually long lifetime, so that atoms accumulate there rather than decaying immediately, allowing population inversion to build up. …
