Greenhouse gases -- chiefly CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, CFCs, water vapour and tropospheric ozone -- absorb and re-radiate infrared heat, warming the Earth's atmosphere (the greenhouse effect).

The greenhouse effect is the natural process by which certain atmospheric gases absorb infrared (heat) radiation re-emitted from the Earth's surface, trapping heat within the atmosphere and keeping the planet warm enough to support life; excessive accumulation of these gases due to human activity, however, causes enhanced warming (global warming). Carbon dioxide (CO2), released mainly by burning fossil fuels and deforestation, is the single most significant greenhouse gas by volume of contribution. Methane (CH4), produced by cattle/livestock digestion, paddy fields, and decomposition of organic waste in landfills, is a far more potent heat-trapping gas per molecule than CO2. Nitrous oxide (N2O) arises from the use of nitrogenous fertilisers and combustion processes. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and related halocarbons, once widely use …
