The greenhouse effect naturally keeps earth warm enough for life; without it, the planet would be a frozen, largely lifeless world.

Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour naturally trap a portion of the infrared heat radiated from the earth's surface, keeping the average global surface temperature around a life-friendly 15C.
