Oparin and Haldane independently proposed that life originated through chemical evolution in the conditions of early earth, roughly 4.5-3.5 billion years ago. At that time, the atmosphere is believed to have been a reducing atmosphere (lacking free oxygen), composed mainly of methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen gas (H2), and water vapour (H2O), along with volcanic gases.
