According to the Oparin-Haldane hypothesis of chemical evolution (chemogeny), the atmosphere of the early Earth, roughly 4.5-4 billion years ago, was very different from today's oxygen-rich atmosphere. It was a strongly reducing atmosphere, composed mainly of methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen gas (H2), and water vapour (H2O), along with possibly some carbon dioxide and other simple gases, but essentially free of molecular oxygen.
