During transcription, RNA polymerase binds to a specific region of DNA (the promoter) and uses one strand of the DNA double helix as a template to synthesise a complementary, single-stranded RNA molecule, following the base-pairing rule (with uracil replacing thymine as the complement of adenine). In eukaryotes this occurs in the nucleus and produces heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA), which is then processed (capping, splicing, tailing) into mature messenger RNA (mRNA); transcription also produces tRNA and rRNA.
