The pass book shows an overdraft of ₹20,000. After adjusting the differences, the balance as per cash book is an overdraft of ₹17,800, matching the NCERT answer.

Concept & treatment

An overdraft is a credit (unfavourable) cash-book balance. Starting from the pass-book overdraft, items that leave the cash book less overdrawn are placed in the Plus (+) column and those that leave it more overdrawn in the Minus (–) column.

Treatment of each item

  1. (ii) Interest ₹2,000 on bank overdraft — debited by the bank in the pass book only; the cash book is less overdrawn ⇒ Plus ₹2,000.
  2. (iii) Insurance premium ₹200 paid by bank — in the pass book only; the cash book is less overdrawn ⇒ Plus ₹200.
  3. (iv) Cheques ₹3,000 and ₹3,500 drawn (issued) but not cleared — total ₹6,500 recorded as payments in the cash book only, so the cash book is more overdrawn ⇒ Minus ₹6,500.
  4. (v) Cheques ₹6,000 deposited but not yet credited — recorded as receipts in the cash book only, so the cash book is less overdrawn ⇒ Plus ₹6,000.
  5. (vii) ₹500 wrongly debited by the bank — appears in the pass book only; the cash book is less overdrawn ⇒ Plus ₹500.
