Arrange the 20 marks in ascending order. As N is even, the median is the average of the 10th and 11th values, which are 45 and 46. Hence the median is 45.5.

Concept

For an individual series the median is the size of the (N+12)th\left(\dfrac{N+1}{2}\right)^{th} item. When NN is even this position is fractional, so the median is the average of the two middle items.
