The difference is the number of variables. A univariate distribution tabulates one variable and its frequencies; a bivariate distribution tabulates two variables simultaneously in a two-way (rows-and-columns) table to show how they occur together.

Univariate frequency distribution

A univariate distribution deals with one variable at a time. It lists the values (or classes) of that single variable and the frequency against each.

  • Example: a table showing the number of students obtaining each range of marks in Economics.
  • It is presented as a simple list of value/class against frequency.

Bivariate frequency distribution

A bivariate distribution deals with two variables together. It is arranged as a two-way table: the classes of one variable form the rows and the classes of the other form the columns, and each cell shows the frequency of items having that particular pair of values.

  • Example: a table showing, for the same group of students, marks in Mathematics (rows) against marks in Economics (columns).
  • It shows how the two variables move together.
