Ancient Games = a local religious festival at Olympia for free-born Greek men in a few events; modern Games = a global, inclusive, multi-sport event promoting peace and Olympic values.

The Ancient Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia in ancient Greece as a religious festival in honour of Zeus. They date back to about the 8th century BCE and continued for many centuries until they were abolished in the late 4th century CE. Only free-born Greek men could compete; married women were generally not even allowed to watch. The programme was small — foot races, wrestling, boxing, the pentathlon, chariot and horse racing and similar events — and the Games were essentially local to the Greek world, combining sport with religious rites and a sacred truce.

The Modern Olympic Games were revived by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, whose efforts led to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896. They too are held every four years but are a global, secular, multi-sport festival, open to athletes of all nations. Their aim is not only competition but the promotion of Olympism — peace, education, and international friendship.
