Metagenesis is the cyclical alternation between the polyp and medusa forms within a single cnidarian's life cycle, exemplified by Obelia.

Cnidarians occur in two basic body forms — the sessile, cylindrical polyp, as seen in Hydra and Adamsia, and the free-swimming, umbrella-shaped medusa, as seen in Aurelia (the jellyfish). In most cnidarians, an individual keeps only one of these forms throughout life, but in some species the life cycle passes through both forms in sequence.

This alternation is called metagenesis. In the cycle:
