These two life-cycle types are described in the chapter as differing in how much of the cycle is spent as a multicellular diploid organism.

Step 1. Haplontic cycle. Draw a haploid, single-celled or multicellular organism producing gametes by mitosis. Two gametes fuse at fertilization to form a diploid zygote — the only diploid cell in the entire cycle. Immediately, this zygote undergoes meiosis, restoring haploid cells that regenerate the haploid organism, closing the loop. Label the diagram to show that mitosis occurs only on the haploid side, and meiosis occurs right after fertilization. Example: some algae and fungi.

Step 2. Haplo-diplontic cycle. Draw a multicellular haploid gametophyte, which produces gametes by mitosis. Two gametes fuse at fertilization to form a diploid zygote, which divides by mitosis to build a multicellular diploid sporophyte. The sporophyte then undergoes meiosis to produce haploid spores, which divide by mitosis to regenerate the gametophyte, closing the loop. Label the diagram to show that, unlike the haplontic cycle, mitosis occurs on both the haploid and diploid sides, giving two distinct multicellular phases. Example: land plants and many algae. …
