The forebrain is built of the cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus, each handling a distinct set of functions from conscious thought to basic drives.

The forebrain is the largest and most elaborate division of the human brain, and it is organised into three principal parts, each with its own role.

The cerebrum forms the major bulk of the brain and is split by a deep lengthwise cleft into left and right cerebral hemispheres, which stay connected through a thick band of fibres, the corpus callosum. Its outer covering, the cerebral cortex, contains motor areas that direct voluntary movement, sensory areas that receive incoming sensations, and association areas that carry out complex tasks such as linking information from different senses, memory and communication. Beneath the cortex, myelinated fibre tracts form the white matter that connects different regions.

The cerebrum wraps around the thalamus, which functions as a major coordinating and relay centre, passing sensory and motor signals between the body and the higher processing centres of the brain. …
