The Krebs' cycle takes acetyl CoA into a mitochondrial cyclic pathway that regenerates oxaloacetate, completely oxidises the acetyl group to two CO2, and per turn yields 3 NADH, 1 FADH2 and 1 GTP.

The citric acid cycle, also called the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle or Krebs' cycle (after Hans Krebs), operates in the matrix of the mitochondria. It begins when acetyl CoA (2C) condenses with oxaloacetic acid (OAA, 4C) and water to form citric acid (6C), releasing the CoA.

Overall schematic

            Acetyl CoA (2C)
                 |  + Oxaloacetic acid (4C)
            Citric acid (6C)
                 |  -> CO2, NADH
            alpha-ketoglutaric acid (5C)
                 |  -> CO2, NADH
            Succinyl CoA (4C)
                 |  -> GTP (-> ATP)
            Succinic acid (4C)
                 |  -> FADH2
            Fumaric acid (4C)
                 |
            Malic acid (4C)
                 |  -> NADH
            Oxaloacetic acid (4C) --> (cycle repeats)

Yield per turn of the cycle

  • Two molecules of CO2 are released (at the citric acid → alpha-ketoglutarate and alpha-ketoglutarate → succinyl CoA steps).
  • Three points reduce NAD+ to NADH + H+; one point reduces FAD+ to FADH2. …
