In each case the 7% Debentures A/c is credited at its full face value; the issue entry records the cash and any premium on issue, discount on issue, or premium payable on redemption so that debits equal credits.

Concept

The Debentures A/c is credited at face value in every situation. A premium on issue is credited to Securities Premium Reserve; a discount on issue is debited to Discount on Issue of Debentures A/c; a premium payable on redemption is provided at issue by crediting Premium on Redemption of Debentures A/c and debiting Loss on Issue of Debentures A/c (which also absorbs any issue discount). Each issue entry must balance.

Working Note (face values and amounts)

  • (a) 27,000 × ₹100 = ₹27,00,000 face value.
  • (b) 25,000 × ₹100 = ₹25,00,000; redemption premium @ 4% = ₹1,00,000.
  • (c) 20,000 × ₹100 = ₹20,00,000; discount @ 5% = ₹1,00,000 → cash ₹19,00,000.
  • (d) 30,000 × ₹100 = ₹30,00,000; discount @ 5% = ₹1,50,000; redemption premium @ 2½% = ₹75,000 → total loss ₹2,25,000, cash ₹28,50,000.
  • (e) 35,000 × ₹100 = ₹35,00,000; issue premium @ 4% = ₹1,40,000 → cash ₹36,40,000; redemption premium @ 5% = ₹1,75,000.
