Sales promotion is a short-term, incentive-driven tool in the promotion mix that supplements advertising and personal selling by offering immediate, tangible rewards to customers, dealers, or salespeople to boost demand and clear inventory.

Sales promotion is one of the four key elements of the promotion mix — the others being advertising, personal selling, and publicity. While advertising builds long-term brand awareness and personal selling nurtures relationships, sales promotion steps in with a different purpose: to create an immediate, measurable spike in sales. Think of it as the "push" that gets a customer to act now rather than later.

In this chapter, sales promotion refers to short-term incentives designed to encourage buyers to make an immediate purchase of a product or service. This is crucial — it is not about building a brand image over years; it is about triggering a specific behaviour in a short time frame. For example, a "Buy One Get One Free" offer on a shampoo brand does not change how you feel about the brand permanently, but it makes you buy that shampoo today instead of next week.

The Core Role of Sales Promotion

Sales promotion plays several distinct roles in the promotion mix, each aimed at a different target audience:

For consumers — the end buyers — sales promotion acts as a direct inducement. It offers price-offs, coupons, free samples, contests, or premiums (like a free toy with a cereal box). The goal is to attract new customers, reward loyal ones, and encourage trial of a new product. A free sample of a new detergent, for instance, lets a housewife test it without financial risk — this is far more effective than an advertisement alone.

For dealers and retailers — the middlemen — sales promotion takes the form of trade allowances, display materials, dealer contests, and cooperative advertising. Here the role is to persuade retailers to stock the product, give it prominent shelf space, and push it to customers. A "buy 12 cases, get 1 free" offer to a shopkeeper ensures the product is visible and available when a customer walks in.

For the sales force — the company's own salespeople — sales promotion includes bonuses, incentives, and sales contests. This motivates them to sell more aggressively, especially for slow-moving items or during off-seasons. A cash bonus for every 100 units sold of a particular refrigerator model can dramatically shift a salesperson's focus.

Important

Sales promotion is always short-term and incentive-based. It is not a substitute for advertising or personal selling, but a complement that adds urgency and tangibility to the overall promotion effort.

When and Why Sales Promotion is Used

Companies turn to sales promotion in specific situations:

  • To introduce a new product — a free sample or introductory discount gets people to try it.
  • To clear excess inventory — a "clearance sale" moves old stock before a new model arrives.
  • To counter competition — a price-off or extra quantity offer can win back customers from a rival. …
