Top Management: The Strategic Apex

Top management consists of the senior-most executives of an organisation. They hold the highest positions of authority and are responsible for the entire enterprise.

Who are they?

These managers are known by titles such as:

  • Chairman
  • Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
  • Chief Operating Officer (COO)
  • President
  • Vice-President

Top management is not a single person but a team of managers from different functional areas. For example, the Chief Finance Officer (heading finance) and the Vice-President (Marketing) are both part of this top-level team.

What is their basic task?

Their fundamental role is to integrate diverse elements and coordinate the activities of different departments. They ensure that all departments work together harmoniously to achieve the overall objectives of the organisation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Welfare and Survival: They are ultimately responsible for the survival and long-term well-being of the organisation.
  • Environmental Analysis: They analyse the business environment (economic, social, political, technological factors) and assess its implications for the firm's survival.
