Good posture aligns the body to minimise stress on joints/muscles; poor posture, sustained over time, is one of the causes of the postural deformities this section goes on to describe.

The textbook states that maintaining good posture is important because, when all body parts are aligned, it puts the least stress on joints and muscles, helps prevent fatigue, and supports good productivity in work along with a physically and mentally stress-free condition. Distinguishing poor vs good posture (while sitting, studying, writing, standing, walking):

  • Sitting/studying/writing: good posture keeps the back straight against the chair, feet flat on the floor, and the head level over the shoulders (not jutting forward over a book/screen); poor posture slouches the spine, rounds the shoulders forward, and tilts the head down for long periods.
  • Standing: good posture distributes weight evenly on both feet with the spine in its natural curve; poor posture shifts weight onto one hip or locks the knees, straining the lower back.
