The Staircase method draws a league fixture by adding one team at a time as a new "step," pairing each newly added team against every team already on the staircase; for 6 teams this produces 15 matches, with every pair meeting exactly once.

The Staircase method — procedure

  1. List all N teams (for 6 teams, label them A, B, C, D, E, F).
  2. Step 1: the first two teams on the list play each other — A vs B.
  3. Step 2: the third team, C, is added as a new step and plays every team already listed above it — C vs A and C vs B.
  4. Step 3: the fourth team, D, is added and plays every team already listed — D vs A, D vs B, D vs C.
  5. Continue adding one team at a time; each new team plays only the teams that came before it on the staircase (those earlier teams have already played each other in earlier steps, so there is no repeat).
  6. The process ends when the last team has played every team above it. Because every new team plays only teams above it, and every possible pair falls into exactly one step, no pairing is ever repeated or left out.
