Concept understanding — the one question that decides it
To classify any event, ask a single question: do the competitors come from more than one institution?
- No — everyone is from the same school → INTRAMURAL (intra = within + muros = walls).
- Yes — the opposition comes from another school/college → EXTRAMURAL (extra = outside + muros = walls).
| Event | Competitors from | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Inter-house football (Red House v Blue House) | one school | Intramural |
| Inter-class kabaddi league | one school | Intramural |
| Inter-section relay, morning-assembly race | one school | Intramural |
| Fitness testing of all pupils of a school | one school (not even a contest) | Internal testing, not extramural |
| Inter-school basketball tournament | two or more schools | Extramural |
| Inter-district / inter-state / national meet | many institutions | Extramural |

- It develops sportsmanship, discipline and the ability to handle pressure away from home.
- It gives the school's best players experience of real competition, and it is the pathway from school sport to district, state and national representation.
- Intramurals feed extramurals: talent is spotted inside the walls, then tested outside them. …
