Cry proteins are natural insect-killing toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis; their genes were engineered into crops so the plants make their own built-in insecticide.

What are Cry proteins: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a soil bacterium, produces crystalline protein toxins during a specific phase of its growth/sporulation, encoded by a family of genes called cry genes (e.g., cryIAc, cryIAb, cryIIAb). Each specific Cry toxin is active against a narrow, specific group of insects -- different cry genes target different orders such as Lepidoptera (moths/butterflies, e.g., bollworms), Coleoptera (beetles), or Diptera (flies/mosquitoes). The toxin itself is produced as an inactive protoxin, which becomes active only in the insect's alkaline gut after ingestion; the activated toxin binds to the gut epithelium, creates pores, causes cell lysis, and kills the insect. It is harmless to humans and non-target organisms because it requires the specific insect gut environment to activate and the specific gut receptor to bind.
