Transgenic animals (carrying a foreign gene) benefit mankind through studies of gene function and physiology, as disease models, as producers of useful biological/pharmaceutical products (e.g. in milk), and in vaccine and chemical (toxicity) safety testing.

A transgenic animal is an animal whose DNA has been manipulated to possess and express an extra (foreign) gene. About 95% of all existing transgenic animals are mice. They are produced for the following benefits to mankind:

1. Study of normal physiology and development:

Transgenic animals are used to study how genes are regulated and how they affect the normal functions of the body and its development, e.g. the study of complex factors like insulin-like growth factor.

2. Study of disease (disease models):

Many transgenic animals are designed to develop and be models of human diseases so that investigation of new treatments becomes possible. Models exist for human diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.

3. Biological products (molecular farming):

Useful and expensive medicines/biological products can be produced by introducing the gene coding for a particular product. Example: the human protein alpha-1-antitrypsin (used to treat emphysema); attempts to treat phenylketonuria and cystic fibrosis. In 1997 the first transgenic cow, Rosie, produced human-protein-enriched milk (2.4 g of the human protein alpha-lactalbumin per litre), a more nutritionally balanced product for human babies than natural cow milk.

4. Vaccine safety: …
