Industrial soot darkened the tree bark, reversing which moth colour is camouflaged; natural selection then favoured the dark moths (survival of the fittest), so their numbers increased — the peppered-moth story of industrial melanism.

From the CBSE/NCERT Evolution chapter (a classic case of natural selection — the peppered moth, Biston betularia):

  1. Reason for the change: Before industrialisation, tree trunks were covered with pale lichens; the white-winged moths were camouflaged and the dark moths were easily seen and eaten. After industrialisation, soot and pollution killed the lichens and blackened the bark. Now the dark (melanised) moths blended in while the white moths stood out against the dark bark and were picked off by predatory birds.
  2. In terms of natural selection:
  • Both colour variants already existed in the population (variation).
  • On the darkened, polluted bark, the dark moths had a survival advantage (better camouflage from predators) — they were the fitter variant.
  • They survived and reproduced more, passing on the dark-colour trait, while white moths were selectively removed. …
