Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection explains evolution as the outcome of heritable variation, overproduction, competition for limited resources, and differential survival/reproduction of the best-adapted individuals over successive generations.

Charles Darwin proposed his theory of evolution by natural selection in On the Origin of Species (1859), based largely on his observations during the voyage of HMS Beagle. The theory rests on the following key postulates:

  1. Overproduction / prodigious rate of reproduction: organisms have the capacity to produce far more offspring than can possibly survive to adulthood - populations tend to grow geometrically if unchecked.
  2. Limited resources and struggle for existence: since food, space, and other resources in any habitat are limited, all the offspring produced cannot survive; this creates competition - a "struggle for existence" - among individuals, both against members of their own species (intraspecific), against other species (interspecific), and against the physical environment.
  3. Variation: individuals within a population are not identical; they show heritable variations in their traits (arising from mutation and recombination), some of which make an individual better or worse suited to its environment than others.
  4. Natural selection / survival of the fittest: because of the struggle for existence, individuals whose variations make them better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and successfully reproduce, while those less well adapted are more likely to die before reproducing or leave fewer offspring. Nature thus "selects" the fitter variants - a process Darwin (borrowing Herbert Spencer's phrase) called "survival of the fittest." …
