Metastasis is how a malignant tumour spreads to distant organs via blood/lymph, which is what makes cancer life-threatening.

A tumour is a mass of abnormally proliferating cells. Benign tumours stay confined to their original site and do not invade neighbouring tissue. Malignant tumours (cancers), however, consist of fast-growing cells that invade and damage surrounding normal tissue. Some malignant cells break away, enter the blood stream or lymphatic vessels, and travel to distant parts of the body. There they lodge in new tissue and start dividing, forming secondary tumours.
