A mature human sperm has four structurally and functionally distinct regions — head, neck, middle piece, and tail — each specialised for fertilisation and motility.

Since this answer is text-based, the structure of the sperm (in place of a hand-drawn, labelled diagram) is described region by region, from the anterior (head) end to the posterior (tail) tip:

  1. Head: The anterior-most, oval-shaped part. It contains an elongated, haploid (n) nucleus with tightly condensed chromatin. The front two-thirds of the nucleus is capped by the acrosome, a membrane-bound vesicle filled with hydrolytic enzymes (like hyaluronidase and proteases) that help the sperm penetrate the layers surrounding the ovum at fertilisation.

  2. Neck: A short connecting region just behind the head, containing the centrioles (proximal and distal), which are important for the first cell divisions after fertilisation and for organising the tail's microtubules.

  3. Middle piece: Contains a spirally arranged sheath of numerous mitochondria around the axial filament. These mitochondria generate the ATP needed to power the whip-like movements of the tail.
