The sperm is a highly specialised, motile cell with three structural regions — head, middle piece, and tail — each suited to its function of carrying and delivering the paternal genome.

Since a physical drawing cannot be rendered here, the structure of a human sperm (as it should be drawn and labelled) is described part by part, from anterior to posterior:

  1. Head: the foremost region, containing a haploid, elongated and condensed nucleus. The front two-thirds of the nucleus is covered by a cap-like structure called the acrosome, which is filled with enzymes (like hyaluronidase and proteases) that help the sperm penetrate the egg's (ovum's) outer layers during fertilisation.

  2. Neck: a short region just behind the head, containing the centrioles (proximal and distal), important for the first cell division after fertilisation.

  3. Middle piece: contains numerous mitochondria arranged in a spiral around the axial filament; these mitochondria generate the ATP (energy) needed to power the whip-like beating of the tail, i.e. sperm motility.
