Satellite DNA is repetitive DNA that forms a separate density peak from bulk DNA and is the basis of DNA fingerprinting.

Genomic DNA can be separated on the basis of nucleotide composition (%GC content) by density gradient centrifugation. Most DNA forms one major peak called the main-band DNA. A minor fraction, made up of highly repetitive sequences (a short sequence repeated many, many times, e.g. tandem repeats), has a different buoyant density and forms a small separate peak called satellite DNA. This fraction does not code for proteins, shows little variation in sequence within an individual but a lot of variation (in the number of repeats) between individuals, and is concentrated in the centromeric and telomeric heterochromatin.
