Aneuploidy is a chromosomal abnormality where the chromosome number deviates from the normal diploid number by the gain or loss of one or a few chromosomes; trisomy of chromosome 21 causes Down syndrome, and an XXY genotype causes Klinefelter syndrome.

Aneuploidy refers to a chromosomal-number abnormality that arises due to the failure of chromosome segregation (non-disjunction) at anaphase during cell division, so that a gamete (and consequently the zygote/individual formed from it) has one or more extra or missing chromosomes compared to the normal diploid number — rather than a whole extra set (which is called polyploidy).

(i) Trisomy of the 21st chromosome — Down syndrome: The individual has an extra copy of chromosome 21, so instead of the normal two, there are three copies (2n+1). This condition, called Down syndrome, is characterised by features such as a short stature, small round head, furrowed tongue, partially open mouth, characteristic palm-crease pattern, and varying degrees of mental/physical developmental delay.
