Female gametophyte (embryo sac) development in angiosperms follows the monosporic (Polygonum) pattern: meiosis of the megaspore mother cell gives four megaspores, one surviving megaspore then divides mitotically three times to give an 8-nucleate, 7-celled embryo sac.

Inside the ovule, one cell of the nucellus differentiates as the Megaspore Mother Cell (MMC), which is large with dense cytoplasm and a prominent nucleus.

Steps of development (Polygonum/monosporic type — the most common in angiosperms):

  1. The MMC undergoes meiosis (meiotic division) to produce four haploid megaspores, usually arranged linearly.
  2. In most angiosperms, only the chalazal megaspore remains functional; the other three degenerate.
  3. The functional megaspore's nucleus divides mitotically to form a 2-nucleate embryo sac.
  4. Two further successive mitotic divisions follow, resulting in a 4-nucleate, then an 8-nucleate stage.
  5. Cell wall formation follows, organising the 8 nuclei into a 7-celled embryo sac:
    • 3 antipodal cells at the chalazal end.
    • 2 polar nuclei in a large central cell. …
