Monosporic development = the embryo sac arises from only one of the four megaspores (the other three degenerate); the mature embryo sac is 7-celled and 8-nucleate with an egg apparatus (egg + 2 synergids), 3 antipodals, and a central cell holding 2 polar nuclei.

From the CBSE/NCERT Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants chapter (megasporogenesis and the female gametophyte):

(a) Monosporic development [2]:

  • Inside the ovule, the megaspore mother cell (MMC) undergoes meiosis to form four haploid megaspores, usually in a linear tetrad.
  • In most flowering plants, three of these megaspores degenerate and only the single functional (chalazal) megaspore develops further.
  • Because the embryo sac develops from just one megaspore, this pattern is called monosporic development of the female gametophyte.

(b) Mature embryo sac — 7-celled, 8-nucleate [3]: After three free-nuclear mitotic divisions and cellularisation, the mature embryo sac shows:

  • Egg apparatus at the micropylar end: one egg cell flanked by two synergids (with a filiform apparatus that guides the pollen tube). …
