Mond's process is a vapour-phase refining method: impure nickel is converted into the volatile complex Ni(CO)4Ni(CO)_4, which is then thermally decomposed elsewhere to deposit pure metallic nickel.

Nickel has the useful property that it forms a volatile carbonyl complex with carbon monoxide, while most common impurities do not. This is exploited in a two-step process:

Step 1 — Formation of volatile complex (330–350 K): Impure nickel is heated in a stream of carbon monoxide, forming volatile nickel tetracarbonyl:

Ni(impure)+4CO→330−350 KNi(CO)4  (gas)Ni_{(impure)} + 4CO \xrightarrow{330-350\,K} Ni(CO)_4 \;(\text{gas})

The solid impurities remain behind (not volatile), while the gaseous Ni(CO)4Ni(CO)_4 is carried away, achieving separation.
