Aluminium is extracted by electrolysing alumina dissolved in molten cryolite (Hall–Héroult process) in a graphite-lined steel cell.

The electrolytic cell used for the extraction of aluminium (Hall–Héroult process) consists of:

  • An outer steel shell, lined inside with refractory bricks and then with carbon/graphite, which itself acts as the cathode.
  • Several thick graphite (carbon) rods, suspended from above and dipping into the melt, acting as the anodes.
  • The electrolyte is purified alumina (Al2O3Al_2O_3) dissolved in molten cryolite (Na3AlF6Na_3AlF_6) with a little fluorspar (CaF2CaF_2) added to lower the melting point (from ~2323 K for pure alumina down to about 1220 K) and increase conductivity. …
