Flux removes gangue as slag during smelting; leaching concentrates an ore by selective chemical dissolution.

Flux: A flux is a chemical substance added to the ore during smelting (roasting/calcination + heating with a reducing agent) that combines with the infusible gangue (earthy impurity) present in the ore to form an easily fusible, low-melting compound called slag, which separates from the molten metal. Flux may be acidic (e.g. SiO2SiO_2, added when gangue is basic) or basic (e.g. CaCO3CaCO_3, added when gangue is acidic, e.g. CaCO3+SiO2→CaSiO3 (slag)+CO2CaCO_3 + SiO_2 \rightarrow CaSiO_3\,(slag) + CO_2).
