Calcination uses limited air (removes moisture/CO2CO_2 from carbonate & hydrated ores); roasting uses excess air/oxygen (converts sulphide ores to oxides).

Calcination: The ore is strongly heated in the absence of, or with a limited supply of, air, at a temperature below its melting point. This removes volatile impurities such as water (from hydrated oxides) and carbon dioxide (from carbonate ores), and converts the ore into its oxide.

Example: CaCO3→ΔCaO+CO2↑CaCO_3 \xrightarrow{\Delta} CaO + CO_2\uparrow
