Lanthanide contraction is the gradual shrinkage in size across La→Lu caused by imperfect shielding by 4f electrons; because La3+La^{3+} is larger than Lu3+Lu^{3+}, La(OH)3La(OH)_3 is more ionic and hence more basic than Lu(OH)3Lu(OH)_3.

(a) Lanthanide contraction and its causes

As one moves across the lanthanide series from La (Z=57)La\ (Z=57) to Lu (Z=71)Lu\ (Z=71), filling the 4f4f orbitals, there is a steady and cumulative decrease in the atomic and ionic (especially M3+M^{3+}) radii. This overall decrease is called the lanthanide contraction.

Causes:

  1. Poor shielding by 4f electrons: The 4f4f orbitals are diffuse and have poor shielding ability — electrons added to a 4f4f orbital do not effectively screen each other, or the outer electrons, from the increasing nuclear charge.
  2. Increasing effective nuclear charge: As each proton is added going across the series, the poor 4f4f shielding means the effective nuclear charge felt by the outermost electrons increases steadily, pulling the electron cloud in and contracting the radius at each step.
  3. The contraction is small at each individual element but adds up to a substantial total decrease over the whole series.
