Lanthanoid contraction is the gradual size decrease across the 4f series due to weak 4f-shielding; as size decreases basicity of Ln2O3Ln_2O_3/Ln(OH)3Ln(OH)_3 falls, so Lu<...<LaLu < ... < La in basic nature.

Lanthanoid contraction. As we move across the lanthanoid series (La → Lu), each additional electron enters the inner 4f subshell. A 4f electron shields another 4f electron very poorly from the nucleus, so the effective nuclear charge on the outer electrons steadily increases. This causes a regular, small decrease in atomic and ionic (Ln3+^{3+}) radii from La to Lu. This overall decrease in size is called the lanthanoid contraction.

Consequence: the elements of the second and third transition series that follow have almost the same size (e.g. Zr and Hf, Nb and Ta).
