Lanthanoid contraction is the gradual shrinkage of Ln atomic/ionic radii across the series due to poor 4f shielding.

Definition: As we move across the lanthanoid series (La → Lu, Z = 57 → 71), the added electrons enter the inner 4f subshell. The 4f electrons shield the nuclear charge very poorly. Hence the effective nuclear charge felt by the outer electrons steadily increases, and the atomic and ionic radii decrease steadily from La to Lu. This regular decrease is the lanthanoid contraction.

Two consequences:

  1. Similarity of the 4d and 5d (second and third) transition series: the contraction almost cancels the expected size increase, so pairs like Zr and Hf (and Nb/Ta, Mo/W) have nearly identical radii and very similar chemistry, making them hard to separate.
  2. Difficulty in separation of the lanthanoids themselves: their radii and hence chemical properties are so close that separation is difficult. …
