Impedance Z = sqrt(R^2 + (XL - XC)^2) is the total opposition of a series RLC circuit to AC; unit is the ohm.

In a series RLC circuit driven by an alternating source, three elements oppose the current:

  • resistance R (in phase),
  • inductive reactance XL = omega L (voltage leads current),
  • capacitive reactance XC = 1/(omega C) (voltage lags current).

Because the reactances act in opposite phase, they partly cancel, giving a net reactance (XL - XC). The impedance Z is the effective total opposition, found by combining R and the net reactance like perpendicular vectors (phasor addition):

Z = sqrt(R^2 + (XL - XC)^2).
