The metre bridge is a Wheatstone bridge on a 1 m wire; at the null point X = R (100 - l)/l gives the unknown resistance.

Principle: The metre bridge works on the balanced Wheatstone bridge condition, P/Q = R/S. A uniform 1 m (100 cm) resistance wire of constant cross-section provides two of the arms, whose resistances are proportional to their lengths.

Arrangement: The unknown resistance X is connected in the left gap and a known resistance box R in the right gap. A cell drives current through the whole wire; a galvanometer connects a jockey (sliding contact) to the junction between X and R.

Procedure:

  1. Slide the jockey along the wire until the galvanometer shows zero deflection — the balance (null) point at length l cm from the left end.
  2. The left segment has length l and the right segment (100 - l). Since the wire is uniform, their resistances are in the ratio l : (100 - l).
  3. Applying the balance condition: X / R = l / (100 - l). Therefore X = R x l / (100 - l), …
