In a series circuit, the same current flows through every resistor, and the total resistance is simply the sum of the individual resistances.

Consider three resistors R1R_1, R2R_2, R3R_3 connected end-to-end (in series) across a battery of emf VV, so that the same current II flows through all three (there is only one path for current). Let V1,V2,V3V_1, V_2, V_3 be the potential drops across R1,R2,R3R_1, R_2, R_3 respectively. By Ohm's law for each:

V1=IR1,V2=IR2,V3=IR3V_1 = IR_1,\quad V_2 = IR_2,\quad V_3 = IR_3

Since the resistors are in series, the total applied voltage equals the sum of individual drops:

V=V1+V2+V3=I(R1+R2+R3)V = V_1 + V_2 + V_3 = I(R_1 + R_2 + R_3) …
