Radioactivity is the spontaneous disintegration of unstable nuclei; the decay rate at any instant is proportional to the number of undecayed nuclei present, which leads directly to the exponential decay law N=N0e−λtN=N_0e^{-\lambda t}.

Radioactivity: It is the spontaneous phenomenon in which unstable atomic nuclei disintegrate on their own, emitting radiation (α\alpha, β\beta, or γ\gamma rays) and transforming into a different (often more stable) nucleus. It is a purely nuclear process, unaffected by external conditions like temperature or pressure, and each decay event is random and independent of others.

Radioactive decay law: The number of nuclei decaying per unit time (i.e. −dNdt-\dfrac{dN}{dt}) at any instant is directly proportional to the number of undecayed (parent) nuclei NN present at that instant:

−dNdt∝N  ⟹  −dNdt=λN-\frac{dN}{dt}\propto N \implies -\frac{dN}{dt}=\lambda N

where λ\lambda is the decay constant, characteristic of the radioactive nuclide.

Showing it is exponential: Rearranging and integrating,

dNN=−λ dt\frac{dN}{N}=-\lambda\,dt

∫N0NdNN=−λ∫0tdt\int_{N_0}^{N}\frac{dN}{N}=-\lambda\int_0^t dt

ln⁡N−ln⁡N0=−λt  ⟹  ln⁡(NN0)=−λt\ln N - \ln N_0 = -\lambda t \implies \ln\left(\frac{N}{N_0}\right)=-\lambda t

N(t)=N0 e−λtN(t)=N_0\,e^{-\lambda t} …
