Reverse bias pulls majority carriers away from the junction on both sides, so the region depleted of mobile carriers gets wider.

In reverse biasing, the p-side is connected to the negative terminal and the n-side to the positive terminal of the battery. This:

  • Attracts holes in the p-region further away from the junction (towards the negative terminal) and attracts electrons in the n-region further away from the junction (towards the positive terminal).
  • Pulls majority carriers away from the junction on both sides, exposing more of the fixed immobile ions, which widens the depletion region.
  • The applied reverse voltage adds to the built-in potential barrier, further increasing the barrier that opposes any further movement of majority carriers. Only a tiny reverse saturation current (due to minority carriers) flows. …
