Forward bias narrows the depletion layer and lets majority carriers flow easily across the junction.

In forward bias, the p-side of the junction is connected to the positive terminal and the n-side to the negative terminal of the battery. The applied electric field is directed opposite to the junction's internal (built-in) field, so it opposes and reduces the barrier potential and narrows the depletion region. Majority carriers — holes in the p-region and electrons in the n-region — are pushed towards the junction; once the applied voltage exceeds the threshold/knee voltage (about 0.7 V for silicon, 0.3 V for germanium), the depletion layer becomes thin enough for majority carriers to cross the junction easily, and a large forward current flows, increasing rapidly with applied voltage.
