Forward bias narrows the depletion layer (allowing current to flow easily); reverse bias widens it (blocking current flow).

At a p-n junction, diffusion of majority carriers across the junction leaves behind a narrow region depleted of free charge carriers, called the depletion layer, with an associated built-in potential barrier.

(i) Forward bias — the p-side is connected to the positive terminal and n-side to the negative terminal of the battery. The applied voltage opposes the built-in barrier potential, so the effective barrier is reduced. This causes the depletion layer to become thinner (narrower), and majority carriers can cross the junction easily once the width becomes negligible, allowing a large current to flow.
